Different Belmont Betting Types

There are various bets you can wager on at the Belmont Stakes.

Straight Bets

Straight bets are a great betting type for beginners. There are three main straight bets US bettors can wager on:

  • Win: This the most common and frankly, easiest bet to make. You just have to pick the horse that will come first.
  • Place: This bet allows you to pick the horses that will come in first or second. However, even though your chances of winning are increased, the size of the payout is much smaller. A place bet is good if you can’t decide between two horses.
  • Show: With this bet type, you pick the top three horses. Like a place bet, the chances of winning are high but the payout is low unless you go for a long shot.

If you’re going for straight bets, you may consider the ‘across the board’ bet. This is best way to say that you want your horse to finish in any of the top three spots. For instance, $10 Across the Board means $10 to win, $10 to place, and $10 to show. So, if your horse come in third, then you’ll just collect from the show bet.

Exotic Bets

Exotic bets are for the more experienced horse bettors. Some exotic bets to wager on are:

  • Quinella: you need to pick the horses that will come first and second.
  • Exacta: you must pick the top two horses and their exact finishing order. This bet pays better than the Quinella bets.
  • Trifecta: you need to pick the exact order of the top three horses.
  • Superfecta: if you can manage to pick the exact finishing order of the top four horses, then you’ll get a really great payout. Place this bet when you fell like a field is top heavy.

How to Box, Key, or Wheel Your Exotic Bets

  • To Box a bet is taking every combination possible for an Exotic bet. For example, let’s say you like the 4th, 6th, and 9th horses in a race but you’re not sure which one will come out top. Box all three in a Trifecta. You’ll be guaranteed a win as long as they finish first, second, and third.
  • A Key bey is when you pick a horse you think will finish in a specific spot, usually first. You then combine it with other horses you like. Let’s say you’re confident that the 3rd horse will finish first but you’re not sure how the 2nd, 4th, and 6th horse are going to do in your Trifecta. Place a Key on the 3rd horse and the other three horses. You’ll win as long as the 3rd comes in first and either the 2nd, 4th, and 6th finish second and third.
  • A Wheel bet is when you pick the horses you think will win, place, or show. The number of horses you pick depends on the type of exotic bet you’re using. For example, you could place an Exacta wheel on the 3rd horse which gives you an Exacta bet on every combination in the field with the 3rd horse winning.

Basic Handicapper Guide for Smart Horse Bets

Let’s take a look at some Belmont Stakes betting tips. These will help you make smart picks when it comes to choosing your horse.

  • Look out for an experienced jockey: this is especially important in a race as long as the Belmont. They know the horses, trainers, and owners.
  • Avoid betting on the house favorite: unlike the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, it’s not common for the favorite to win the Belmont. Even the numbers say so: it’s happened only seven times in the last 39 years.
  • Rest is important: try go for a well-rested horse. There are only three weeks of rest between the Preakness and Belmont Stakes.
