The very first race happened in 1873. It was named after the colt Preakness who won the Dinner Party Stakes by the then governor of Maryland, Oden Bowie. Initially the race struggled to establish itself. It found its home at the Pimlico racetrack in Maryland, since 1909 after spending 15 years at the Gravesend Race Track on Coney Island.
Winners of Preakness receive the famous Woodlawn Vase and are draped on a blanket of black-eyed Susans. This is the official flower of the state of Maryland.

- Fastest time goes to Secretariat set in 1973. He ran the track in 1:53.00.
- The jockey to have the most wins in the race is Eddie Arcaro who won it six times in 1941, 1948, 1950, 1951, 1955, and 1957.
- Most win by a trainer go to R. Wyndham Walden who has won the Preakness in 1875, 1878, 1879, 1880, 1881, 1882, 1888.
